    NumberSense Workshops: Term 3

    Manipulating Numbers: The role and development of manipulating number skills (mental arithmetic) in the NumberSense classroom

    In this workshop we will explore:

    • The role of routine in structuring learning in a NumberSense classroom.
    • Effective, research-based manipulating number routines for developing fluent and flexible calculating skills.
    • Understanding, applying and reasoning with number facts when manipulating numbers.
    • Using the NumberSense manipulating number routines effectively.

    NumberSense Workshops: Term 4

    Problem-Solving: Managing problem-solving in the NumberSense classroom

    In this workshop we will explore:

    • The role of routine in structuring learning in a NumberSense classroom.
    • Effective, research-based approaches to using problems to teach mathematics for understanding, application and reasoning.
    • Trajectories of age, grade and number range appropriate problem-solving strategies.
    • Developing and managing problem-solving.

    Geometry: The NumberSense Companion Activities in the NumberSense classroom

    In this workshop we will explore:

    How the NumberSense Companion Activities (which address measurement, geometry and data handling) together with the NumberSense Workbooks provide a comprehensive mathematics programme that addresses the mathematics curriculum expectations from Grade R to Grade 7.

    • Developing geometric thinking in a NumberSense classroom with the focus on understanding, application and reasoning.
    • Van Hiele’s levels of geometric thinking and phases of learning.
    • The exciting and innovative range of interactive and grade-appropriate NumberSense geometry activities.
